Filigree Jewellery
The island of Mompox, off the Caribbean coast of Colombia, is known for its fine precious metal-smithing, and especially for its filigree art, which is crafted delicately by dedicated goldsmiths who have had the trade passed down to them from generation to generation.
Mompox jewellery is characterised by the use of the filigree technique; i.e. work in miniature dimensions. Mompox filigree work produces handicrafts of very high quality, with fine gold strands, following the process of stretching, twisting, and flattening the metal.
The basis of the filigree is gold filament, a symbol of the island’s identity. Nowadays, Mompox filigree work is more geared to silver, due primarily to the scarcity of gold, but this increases the popularity of the jewellery. Gold filigree jewellery is only made upon request.
